Garcia's voice is toast in this one (pneumonia or something like that) but his playing is fantastic. A top five of 1978 in my book.

Cliff,

I noticed that you have 9-16 ranked very high. I wouldn't call that show hard rockin' but it is one of my favs of the year and most definitely the best of the Egypt shows. Curious what you like about it. I love the Ollin>Fire. Probably my favorite Ollin. I think it kind of sucks that they cut the Ollin down so much in the Rockin' the Cradle release. I also like the way the did Aiko in that show and the early Shakedown is pretty cool too.

I dig it for the cool Nubian vibe!

I might change a couple but overall this is a solid list from what I consider to be a wildly uneven year (the poor man's '77).

9/16/78 - those eygpt shows Cliff are weak. I really found the Rockin The Cradle CD as poor as Steal Your Face, and have not been able to come to grips with your rating number here. 96+ Seems very high compared with 4/16/78 which I love and would rate higher.

9/16/78 gets a good score partially for it's historic significance and uniqueness, but I also think that you are selling it a bit short. It does not warrant an astronomic score, just a very good one.

And 4/16/78 should rightfully score a bit higher. But more so because of its extraordinarily great sound quality, than whats transpiring on the stage...

Great point on the Sound of 4/16/78 being its best selling point, and begs a question - how much weight do you put on the source/tape/recording when ranking your shows? I mean the reason I fell in love with Kentucky 74 was its incredible sound quality, but does that just color our opinion of a show? Do we judge just on the musicianship, or do we take into account other factors, like is it a betty board, is it an Oade Aud, when ranking shows? Just pondering here...

Sound quality is important. A rather rough breakdown on the weighting of my scoring would be:

70% musicianship
20% sound quality
10% set list
